Prices in April 1999

Consumer prices rose by 0.3 percent in April month-on-month, following broadly similar increases of 0.4 percent in February and 0.3 percent in March. Much of the rise in the CPI came from price hikes for, among industrial products, petroleum products affected by the upturn of the oil price in the international market, and among agricultural products from higher prices for fruit caused by last year's poor harvests which left cold-store stocks depleted. But service charges were down largely centering on lower leasehold deposits in a sluggish real-estate market.

Producer prices, meanwhile, moved up by 0.3 percent in April from a month earlier, following a downward movement for five straight months from November 1998. The upturn in the PPI was attributable mostly to a rise in the prices of petroleum products and chemical products among manufacturing industry products, and of livestock products, and fresh fruit among farm products.
