Prices in September 1999

Consumer prices rose 0.3% in September over the previous month, after increasing 1.0% in August.  Much of the rise in consumer prices was caused by rising prices in the products sector, particularly for oils & coals affected by the higher crude oil prices.  Another factor for the increase in consumer prices was a increasing demand for agricultural & marine products around the Harvest Moon festival.

Producer prices also moved up 0.5% in September from a month earlier, after climbing by 0.7% in the previous month. The upward movement of the PPI is mainly tied to rising prices in the manufacturing industry products sector, particularly for the coke & petroleum products affected by the higher crude oil prices.
