Prices in October 1999

Consumer prices rose more rapidly in October, 0.8% as against 0.3% in September over the preceding month.  Much of the rise in consumer prices was caused by rising prices in the industrial products sector, particularly for oils & coals affected by the higher crude oil prices.  Another factor for the increase in consumer prices was a increasing demand for agricultural & marine products around the pleasure-making season.

Producer prices also moved up 1.0% in October from a month earlier, after climbing by 0.5% in the previous month. The upward movement of the PPI is mainly tied to rising prices in the manufacturing industry products sector, particularly for the coke & petroleum products affected by the higher crude oil prices.
